Who is Sports Massage for?

Please remember, sports massage is not specifically for sports injuries.  It is also very effective for people from all walks of life, particularly for someone looking to improve flexibility, ease tight or painful muscles or combat postural or musculoskeletal pain. This may be from an everyday injury or simply postural related conditions from spending hours in front of a desk.

How does sports massage work?

Sports massage involves the manipulation of soft tissues such as muscles, tendons and ligaments.  Sports massage can help:

  • Improve circulation and lymphatic flow
  • Assist in the removal of metabolic waste
  • Sedate or stimulate nerve endings
  • Increase or decrease muscle tone
  • Increase or decrease muscle length
  • Remodel scar tissue when required from previous injuries
  • Assist in mental preparation for sporting participation
What is a sports massage like?

Sports Massage is not the relaxing, tranquil treatment that you’d find at any spa. Instead, it’s a therapy designed to improve quality of movement, boost recovery from injury or exercise and ease pain. It is administered by qualified therapists who have been rigorously trained in the musculoskeletal structure and anatomy of the human body.

Results and benefits of sports massage

So, what does a Sports Massage do?

Sports Massage helps to combat the effects of injury and negative effect of intense and/or frequent sports or fitness training.

It eases tight or sore muscles and improves joint mobility, helping the body move better and recover from exercise faster. It accelerates healing of soft tissue injuries by encouraging the flow of blood carrying oxygen and nutrients, and by treating the muscle tightness and inelasticity that can hinder blood flow. It can also improve posture, and help address the musculoskeletal impact of today’s sedentary and deskbound working practices. Lastly, in addition to its physical effects, Sports Massage Therapy can also reduce stress and anxiety, improve mental and physical relaxation and promote a greater sense of well-being.

Your Chiropractor will communicate with the sports massage therapist to help provide a tailored treatment plan to best suit your needs.

Patients may attend the clinic for sports massage on its own, however if a patient is in pain, we usually recommend having a consultation with one of the clinics Chiropractors first to ensure that sports massage is the most suitable treatment approach.Patients may be prescribed a course of sports massage to best aid their recovery. Similarly, patients often return for a maintenance style massage to help maintain their recovery. All treatment plans are tailored to the patient’s needs.
